The iconic NBA logo is recognizable to millions around the world. Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West’s silhouette has been the NBA logo for quite some time now and there have been numerous debates to change it over the years. In fact, fans want West’s silhouette to be replaced by his protege, Kobe Bryant. The former NBA champion is one of the greatest players ever and is insanely popular to this day. Therefore, Bryant becoming the new NBA logo is certainly a strong case.

In an online petition started by fans, they made a formal request to make the Black Mamba the face of the NBA logo. Interestingly, this petition is quickly gaining traction with the number of signatures increasing every minute.

Jerry West holds the bragging rights for being the face, or rather the silhouette of the league for decades now. Alan Siegel, a brand consultant, who was tasked to create the NBA logo in 1969 chose West to be his model. Interestingly, the same designer had created the Major League Baseball logo a year before.

Although the NBA commissioner loved the design, West himself wasn’t aware that he was chosen for the logo. Kobe Bryant fans have been vocal about changing the logo for some time now.

Their demands have picked up pace as an online petition has resurfaced on change.org. The petition which was started three years ago reads, “With the untimely and unexpected passing of the great Kobe Bryant please sign this petition in an attempt to immortalize him forever as the new NBA Logo.” More than 3,239,522 users have already signed the petition.

West shared a good relationship with Bryant during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers. He also once joked about Bryant’s nickname. In case the league really decides to change the NBA logo, West will certainly be happy to pass the torch to one of his close associates.

Kyrie Irving and Vanessa Bryant have supported this argument in the past

Demands for making the five-time NBA champion the NBA logo started soon after his untimely death in 2020. Not only the fans, Kyrie Irving and Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife, also supported this notion.

The Dallas Mavericks star posted an edited image of Kobe as the NBA logo on Instagram. He captioned the post, “Gotta happen, idc what anyone says.” Moreover, Vannessa Bryant also supported this claim as she shared Irving’s Instagram post.
